This is what racism, xenophobia, and a hatred of the unknown does to otherwise decent Americans.
Purportedly based on SSA no match letters, five Schaumburg, IL Pizza Hut employees were fired on Monday, February 16th. More employees are slated to be fired on March 2nd at a Lake Zurich, IL location. All of these employees have been asked by Pizza Hut management to re-verify their eligibility for employment under the threat of termination. Many have worked at Pizza Hut for more than a decade.
Back in December many national organizations, under the banner of the Low Wage Immigrant Worker Coalition, sent a letter to Yum Brands CEO, David Novak informing him that employers are not required to implement a proposed Department of Homeland Security SSA no match safe-harbor rule because it is under court injunction and blocked. As explained in that letter to Pizza Hut "Currently, the only obligation of an employer upon receipt of an SSA no-match letter is to notify the employee". The employee may correct the error with SSA, but is not required by law to do so. The employer is not required to provide SSA with corrected names and numbers. Moreover, employers are not prohibited from continuing to employ individuals with mismatched Social Security numbers. In fact, the SSA's clear position is that employers should not "take any adverse action against an employee, such as laying off, suspending, firing, or discriminating against that individual, just because his or her social security number appears on the list" and that "doing so could, in fact, violate State or Federal law and subject you to legal consequences" (emphasis added).
Call Pizza Hut's President, Scott Bergren, at (972) 338-7700 and tell him to stop firing immigrant workers and to re-hire those he has already fired!
Let's stop the madness!
Republican lunacy does not see reality. The consequences are the total alienation of the party with the main stream American society as well as many of its "natural" constituencies such as conservative Hispanics and small and medium bussinesses.
"Deportation would mean expelling 6.6 million “illegal” families containing 15 million individuals, 4.9 million children, and 3.5 million American citizens. It would not explain how the pro-life movement will survive the mass alienation of its fastest-growing demographic; or why the employers of 7 million illegals would willingly rat them out."
Conservative Richard Nadler tries to open his fellow conservatives' eyes. Probably to no avail
Israel, como Estado sionista, se enfrenta a una amenaza estratégica, intemporal y cultural: sesenta y dos años después de su creación, sus vecinos no lo aceptan. Y con su útima elección va de mal en peor
Republican chutzpah has no limits. Mr. Obama, dump them! Truthout, again, hits the nail in the head with this great article by William Rivers Pitt:
"President Obama needs to do the work the people overwhelmingly elected him to do, and if the GOP does not want to be a part of that work, so be it. In the long run, a string of Democrat-only legislative victories will have a dynamic effect on the obstructionist tendencies of the GOP. Sooner or later, they'll come running in whole or in part to Obama's side of the aisle, if only to save themselves."
